From Maryland Hill to the Hugh John Flemming Forestry Complex

This bulk of this photo gallery chronicles the construction of the Hugh John Flemming Forestry Complex and adjacent buildings during the period spanning 1984 to 1987. The majority of these photos were, as far as we know, taken and organized by longtime MFRS instructor Robert H. Spurway, who passed away in April of 1994. By the mid-1970s, the original MFRS campus had stood at the top of Maryland Hill for almost four decades. A legacy of use had taken its toll on campus infrastructure and frequent maintenance issues became a concern. Proposals for a replacement school to match modern educational demands had been ongoing for years, and these infrastructure issues only added a sense of urgency to the situation. The Hugh John Flemming Forestry Complex was designed to integrate MFRS into a wider ecosystem of forestry partners, including the Canadian Forest Service (CFS), Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN), and the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development (DNRED).

The Last Winter in the Old Forest Ranger School:

The following pictures are included here as a prelude the the main gallery. They depict student life throughout the halls of the old Ranger School, and were taken in the winter of 1986 by Joe McCutcheon, a graduate of that class. These photos were originally assembled into a mural and still hang on the walls of the MCFT Fredericton campus today.
